[OnwardState] The Penn State chapter of Chi Omega is facing punishments after a racially insensitive image of the sorority surfaced on social media late last week.
The photograph in question was supposedly taken at a Mexican fiesta themed social around Halloween. Members of the Chi Omega Nu Gamma chapter are pictured dressed in ponchos, sombreros, and fake mustaches. One girl is holding a sign that reads “will mow lawn for weed & beer” and another reads “I don’t cut grass I smoke it.”
Here is a statement from Chi-O president, Jessica Ricardi:
“Our chapter of Chi Omega sincerely apologizes for portraying inappropriate and untrue stereotypes. The picture in question does not support any of Chi Omega’s values or reflect what the organization aspires to be.”

I know everyone was waiting for TSP’s response/reaction to this. I mean, after all, we are the voice of reason around Penn State these days.
Here it is.
Don’t take pictures. Pictures get you in trouble. Pictures are bad. Would be fine if everything didn’t need to be on Facebook.
Look, everyone has themed socials all the time. Every social theme would offend someone out there. It’s the world we live in. Since it is so easy for everyone to see everything we do (Facebook, Twitter, TSP, etc.), you can’t do anything anymore. Everyone needs to take a chill pill and stop getting so offended by everything, but that won’t happen, and since that won’t happen, you need to be careful with pictures, and I’m sure Chi-O learned their lesson.
With that being said, I bet there are tons of Mexicans out there that would laugh at, or shrug off, this photo. And unless Roy Baker is Mexican, he wasn’t offended either. I get that he has to do something, because he has to appease the “offended”, but have a backbone Roy! Don’t go over-the-top with your punishment.
These girls we’re just having some fun and 80% of the fun of dressing up for a themed social, is posting pictures on Facebook. Girls live for that shit. They’re not racist, trust me.
Just another example of a seemingly harmless picture, turned into a product of the social media era. Slight controversy = chaos these days. No picture, no problem.
Ps. OK, the signs were a little excessive. Coulda did without those, girls.
Pps. Hi Roy.
1 star for completely incentive and racist, should be harshly punished
5 stars for Be a man Roy— slap them on the wrist, not in the face

I’m pretty sure half the sororities used the same theme last week alone but because a social media sight decides to use a photo posted on facebook one sorority is singled out. The attack on Greek Life continues . . .
