Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz Admits He is Going to Try and “Spread It Around”

[CBSPhillyWeisman sprained his ankle in last week’s 19-16 double-overtime win at Michigan State. He will suit up, but it’s uncertain how effective he can be against Penn State, the Big Ten’s second-best defense in points allowed.

True freshman Greg Garmon, who grew up in Erie, Pa., will likely start for Iowa. The Hawkeyes will need a big night out of him considering they’ve only thrown two touchdown passes all season.

“We are not going to give up on the run but we are going to have to try to compensate a little bit and spread it around and do what we can. But it’s not going to be easy. These guys get after you good up front,” Ferentz said.

I highlight the part where it said Greg Garmon, from Erie, PA, will likely start for Iowa. Interesting. I’m sure he grew up rooting for Penn State. Wesiman out bodes well for PSU, but Iowa spreading it out and likely throwing the ball more than usual doesn’t. Penn State’s strength is defending the run, not the pass. The PSU secondary, although it has been very good, is their weakness on defense. Weird situation here. Star running back injured, forces Iowa coach to change game-plan, which could end up ultimately benefiting them.

Hopefully, not.
