Sixers Have PA Announcer Auditions, and Pick Matt Cord, the Old Pa Announcer

[Sixers.com] PHILADELPHIA, PA. – OCTOBER 11, 2012 – Philadelphia 76ers CEO and Co-Owner Adam Aron today announced that Matt Cord, senior correspondent for SIXERS.COM and on-air personality for 93.3 WMMR, will serve as the team’s public address announcer for the 2012-13 season and beyond.

In the event Cord is unable to call a game, Kevin Casey, public address announcer for the Philadelphia Union, Philadelphia Wings and Camden Riversharks, has formally been designated by the Sixers as the team’s back-up public address announcer.

Cord and Casey were chosen after Sixers executives listened to the auditions of some 107 applicants and after three rounds of tryouts. Candidate auditions were held at the Wells Fargo Center using its booming sound system for amplification. Candidates were asked to announce player introductions, narrate promotional reads and simulate live calls while watching in-game footage displayed on the Wells Fargo Center center-hung scoreboard, among other tests.

Matt Cord is the best. Kind of a slap in the face to put one of the best PA announcer in the business through the auditions, but Matt ultimately proved he is the best. So, there. We’re all good.

The 5 finalists were:

Matt Cord (winner) - Follow Matt on Twitter @Matty93Cord
Kevin Kasey (selected as backup)
Kevin Linton (public address announcer for the Wilmington Blue Rocks)
Brian Startare (radio personality for 94 WIP)
Mark Shepperd (a veteran Philadelphia radio DJ)

Ps. He was on Preston & Steve this morning:
